While I listened to Yeallow, I heard The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Pulp, Supergrass and other similar pop/rock bands. Is this just another British hype? Not at all, they’re French!

The main elements of their music are catchy guitar riffs, some synths, pop/rock with melodious choruses and a singer who is a bit arrogant or nonchalant. That does sound a bit like The Strokes indeed, doesn’t it? And to top it all, they even almost reach their level. Let’s say the choruses of Julian Casablancas are just a little better and more emotional, but otherwise this is a very great album. The songs are easy to listen to!

Be Sure is a rock song with a nice melody that is great as a start. Somewhere Else has a solid rhythm section and forms the backbone of the song. The way the chorus is sung is just delicious: you hear some nonchalance, but everything is done in the highest professional way.

Believe me when I say that all ten tracks stand out from a typical song: the chorus, the rhythm section, a fine riff or a nice bass line… there is always something going on that you’ll love. The songs usually last about three minutes, except Everyday in whiche we hear the best of Yeallow for seven minutes. This track includes funny bass hooks and has a very nice instrumental rock-like centerpiece. I’m sure that this will do well on stage!

This album is like pop/rock should be: unpretentious, catchy and with enough attitude. I’m curious if they can do that on stage too!

Quelques tranches de YEALLOW sous forme d’EP
Cet EP de Yeallow, formation strasbourgeoise, est un avant-goût de leur album “Homebrew”, sorti en avril 2015.

Après le remarqué “2 891 Seconds” paru en 2010, Yeallow nous fait parvenir un EP extrêmement réussi qui parvient à la fois à ancrer une identité sonore tout en proposant de nouvelles compositions marquant une maturité en phase avec l’époque via, notamment, quelques discrètes touches électro. Voilà qui résulte peut-être aussi d’une évolution du line-up du groupe depuis le premier opus puisque le Yeallow millésimé 2015 réunit Fred (alias Peter Maubeuge) au chant, Ted à la guitare, Bill Ottomo à la basse et, depuis 2013, Ced Machi à la batterie. Quant à l’aisance de ce jeu magnétique qui augure de performances live accrocheuses, sans doute vient-elle de la solide expérience scénique du groupe qui a déjà promené amplis et instruments outre-Atlantique (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Monica), outre-Rhin et outre-Manche, notamment au printemps dernier à l’occasion d’une mini-tournée à Londres, Manchester, Leicester, Birmingham et Newcastle.

Le 9 août prochain, Yeallow sera à l’affiche de la scène Off du festival de la Foire aux vins de Colmar.

YEALLOW – HOMEBRED EP REVIEW
Como adelanto a lo que será su nuevo disco, “Homebred”, los franceses YEALLOW nos presentan un EP de cuatro temas para ir abriendo boca, que es la mejor expresión que se me ocurre a tenor de la dulce imagen de la portada. Para quien no los conozca diremos que estos tipos afincados en Estrasburgo hacen, como ellos mismos denominan, Brit’Rock. Como antecedentes tenemos el disco con el que debutaron en el año 2010, titulado “2891 Seconds”, y más recientemente un single digital al que llamaron “Clocks”, de 2014. Así pues este 2015 ya están a tope con su nuevo álbum, el cual verá la luz a través del sello TRY & DYE Records y, hasta entonces, nos ofrecen un pequeño aperitivo con el que degustar su particular propuesta.

YEALLOW no es un grupo para el que las fronteras sean un obstáculo, proceden de Francia pero hacen Rock con tintes británicos; cuando han podido se han ido de gira por el Reino Unido e incluso hasta Los Angeles y San Francisco, para tocar en lugares tan emblemáticos como el Whisky a go-go o el Cat Club. Así pues en su música tampoco se marcan límites estrictos, practicando un Rock hecho con energía, aunque sin demasiada distorsión, y sobretodo con la personalidad que da el meter influencias muy diversas. También el tono de voz es bastante particular, recordando ligeramente al Afterpunk ochentero, y aportando mayor identidad, si cabe, al conjunto. Aun con todo el resultado final es perfectamente coherente de principio a fin, con temas muy directos y sin rodeos.

Cuatro temas que apenas superan a los trece minutos, pero que sirven como carta de presentación, y sobretodo para conocer lo que YEALLOW se llevan entre manos de cara a la publicación del larga duración. Un trabajo que resulta interesante por la personalidad del grupo, que incluso tiene partes bastante pegadizas, pero que tampoco es tan accesible como pueda parecer tras ver la empalagosa cubierta. Así pues si tienes curiosidad por saber como suena, o sabe mejor dicho, el cup-cake que ofrece la banda, estos cuatro cortes te sacarán de dudas de inmediato.

A HIGHER REVELATION | Yeallow – nov. 6, 2015

Yeallow was born in 2010, a simple proposition of four guys offering raw rock that forms the basis of what are said to be energetic and powerful live shows.

But the home produced and aptly titled Homebred is the band’s latest release, delivering sharp riffs as promised and melodies that become catchier on every listen.

There’s a carefree, jovial spirit that emerges early on with Be Sure, with hook driven guitar melodies shining through alongside a catchy chorus, brought to life with a few splashes of colour in the band’s latest video and endeavouring to take those catchy sounds on something a little edgier in Somewhere Else. There’s undoubtedly some bass love being shared here and later with punchy bass lines on the seasonal inspired Rosebud and Everyday, as well as a keenness to venture into unconventional sounds if tracks like Slowly and The Trick are anything to go by but one of the more intriguing is saved for last in Surface.

RAW RAMP and YEALLOW go back a long way…

We first came across YEALLOW (the indie-rock quartet from Strasbourg, France) in 2012, and we were instantly stimulated by their engaging antics…

Since then, we discovered their relaxed, Gallic, off-beat charm, their stunning musicality, their precision mechanics, and their hard edged indie rock sounds.

The band have worked exceedingly hard over the last four years, establishing themselves as an outstanding live act. This November they will be supporting THE STRANGLERS live in Strasbourg, France.

Four months after the official release of Homebred (their new full-length album) the band have now presented a new music video for the single “Stuck in the Ground”.

So, we took a look.

With a hugely successful bass lick and some lightly jazzy riff-work, this gradually grows around you… like a freshly woven web.

Fred’s vocal sits in the lower-pitched ethers (reminding us of Lou Reed)

Not short of experimentation, too erudite to be classed as punk, and too dark to be described as jazz, this is full of originality.

In fact, the art-rock of The Stranglers is the closest comparison we can think of.

When the guitar solo eventually materializes, you get the impression that this could actually be the blues … But so darkened by mood and attitude that it now seems angular…

YEALLOW are an indie rock group from France. They’ve been in existence for five years, with their first album being released back in 2010. Homebred was released on April 20th, 2015. They had five years to hone in on their sound, and it sounds like they did a reasonable job, although this album could have used a little more spice.

All ten tracks on here have a very tight mixdown. The vocals come through cleanly, and nothing sounds muddied up. Every instrument stands out. It can take an artist longer to mix one song, than it takes to actually write the song and record it. This shows that YEALLOW wanted to make this album the best they possibly could. While listening to this album, you’ll probably find yourself humming along to the songs, or maybe tapping your foot.

YEALLOW have even ventured into the area of using repetition as a key element. The average listener could easily find themselves singing along to the fifth track on this album, Rosebud, much like I did.

However, being repetitive can’t always be helpful. The first song, Be Sure, contains a set of four words in the entire chorus. “Can I be sure? Can I be sure? Can I be sure? Can I be sure?” That got boring really quickly. The same thing happens with the song Everyday, with the chorus not only being repetitive, but confusing. “Everything makes sense everyday. Anything and everything.“(YEALLOW, would you mind elaborating on that a little bit?) Everyday also happens to be the longest song on this album by far, clocking in at over seven minutes.

One of the sentences in YEALLOW‘s biography is “It’s simple, but it works” and that is one of the truest statements in that bio. This album is very simple, and there’s not much to it overall. But I like the small amount of substance there is to Homebred. Now, as for the rest of YEALLOW‘s biography, they might want to change their words. “The powerful rock band continues to slap his audience.” I wouldn’t exactly call them powerful. “An incomparable tone of voice.” Yes, the singing voice on this definitely stands out from other rock groups. But, is it great? Not quite. His voice doesn’t flow very well with the rest of the music, at least for my ears. “A guitar drenched in testosterone.” What testosterone? Most of the guitar heard on Homebred is quite simple, and basic. The guitar tones don’t come close to sounding like a full-grown, energetic man, ready to get wild and wow everyone around him. It’s more comparable to a man in his early 20’s, a little socially awkward, and not fully prepared to come out of his shell yet.

Homebred is definitely a good album, perfectly demonstrating YEALLOW‘s sound and style and it has more high points than low points. The mix is tight, the songs are catchy, most things flow pretty well, but some aspects of the album drag it down. Homebred is like a light snack. It won’t fill you up, but it will tide you over until something more meaty comes along. It’s worth a listen.

When you see a band made up of chaps called Fred, Ted, Bill and Ced you could be forgiven for expecting them to be a bunch of toothless Yorkshiremen playing spoons and a tea chest. Instead, this quartet hail from Strasbourg and cite influences like Zappa, Muse, Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem. Intrigued? I know I am. This latest single from Yeallow, ‘The Trick’, has a Zappa meets the Strokes riff to it initially before breaking in to something between Metal Molly, Soulwax, Young Knives and a French version of early Supergrass. The relentless, scuzzy guitars are punctured only by a poppy bass line and the kind of middle eight that you might expect from Dutch Uncles. Yeallow are the musical equivalent of a Lord who has run out of money – classy at the core but rough around the edges.

In a genre where seemingly any band trying to establish a name for themselves can be instantly written off as a simple imitation of whatever other band is attempting to do the same thing, it’s hard to truly rise above the rest in terms of innovation within the indie scene. Thankfully, bands like four-piece Yeallow, hailing from Eastern France, exceed in not only the truly highlighting the inviting nature of the genre in addition but additionally contribute to the scene with a remarkably inventive, pioneering approach to songwriting.
Within minutes of listening to the album, it is already perceptible to witness the evolution in Yeallow’s style and composition, while still in keeping with their more progressively-inclined brand of indie. While it is true that we might miss the heavier, more aggressive nature of their earlier material, such as their 2014 release Clocks (thankfully making a reappearance on the album anyway), perhaps more reminiscent of the likes of Bloc Party or even early Arctic Monkeys, Homebred gives the listener an insight to what this band is capable of. The album opener, Be Sure, is a perfectly agreeable example of what the listener can expect later on, creating a potent blend of guitar licks, basslines and an interesting example of time signatures not often seen in the indie genre. But the second song, Somewhere Else, establishes the aforementioned evolution that Yeallow demonstrate with every release; a heavy, driving mix of tones takes the listener by surprise, coupled with a minor chord progression more commonly found metal and rock, ideas also found in Stuck in the Ground.
The album succeeds in encapsulating a plethora of different sounds. From the opening song to the closer, Surface, Yeallow experiment with light-hearted, foot-tapping indie passages, headbanging riffs that both startle and surprise you, and even explorations into post-rock/metal territory, exhibited on what is arguably the best track on the album, Slowly, which serves a culmination of the innovative efforts that this band are capable of. The melodies and harmonies that bring about the crescendo of the song call to mind Explosions in the Sky’s The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place or even one of This Will Destroy You’s earlier releases, perhaps Young Mountain. But as Homested departs with this part of its journey we are thrust back into the succeeding track, the previously-established combination of Foals¬-esque paradoxically-catchy dissonancereminds one why this band are one of the most important aspects of the indie scene, a genre in dire need of this sort of renovation.
With Homested, Yeallow have done something rather extraordinary; they’ve proved that they can take convention typically found in the indie genre, i.e. fast-paced, eclectic guitars, simple yet enthralling drum and bass lines, changes in tempo, impressive time signatures, and melancholic yet soothing vocals, and modernize it to such an extent that it breathes new life into a genre constantly in danger of growing stale – how many groups can say they’ve successfully achieved such a triumph? Yealloware one of the few bands you’ll come across in your life who possess that ability to remain faithful to the conventions of the genre but at the same time flourish in reinventing and rekindling life into such a genre. As the soothing yet paradoxically dissonant notes of Surface signal the climax of an album of remarkable revolution, we are reminded again that these guys are definitely the ones to watch.

Yeallow is a French band which plays Brit rock; well that is the unexpected sound which their bio states they produce. Taken from their latest album, the Strasbourg quartet has just released new single The Trick to follow up a series of shows in the UK and reveal what their music is actually like, sounds which have feet and appetite happily involved within moments. It reveals that the tag only vaguely hints at the flavoursome concoction of styles which actually converge within the band’s music, though there is no escaping opens whispers of bands like Muse, XTC, and Pulp either.
The band openly pulls on a wide range of styles for their music, sounds and ideas which come from the wide musical backgrounds to and influences upon its members. Everything from jazz to blues, alternative rock to thrash adds spices to the creative pot of four musicians on an adventure “built around a story of strong friendship where the vital need to make music is the common denominator.” The release of Yeallow’s first album 2891 seconds in 2010 quickly lured the attention of a promoter in the US, leading to the band playing a tour of legendary Los Angeles and San Francisco clubs which included venues such as Whisky a go-go and Cat Club. Back in France the band’s stature and success equally rose whilst a tour of the UK in 2012 had British audiences catching on to the band’s sound. It is fair to say that the band has made a widespread impact with a series of tracks/singles across the next couple of years continuing to keep things bubbling, especially the 2014 released Clocks. It is new album Homebred which has ignited the broadest attention yet upon the foursome of Fred aka PMGM (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Ted (guitar, backing vocals), Bill (bass), and Ced (drums), backed by the tour and now The Trick.
Bass and guitars offer an initial drama with their potent entrance before the single quickly settles down into a feisty stride with raw riffs and sharp hooks. The song relaxes into a mellower gait though as the vocals come in, the bass providing a throbbing background to voice and jangling guitar tempting. The track’s scenery is ever evolving though, unpredictable melodies amidst flowing sonic enterprise teasing and sparking the imagination further whilst the rhythmic underbelly of the track never relents in offering low key but constant anthemic bait. Small and engaging crescendos only add to the infectiousness of the song and though it is not an encounter to blow your socks off, it worms under the skin and incites more enjoyment with every listen.
The Trick is a smart and inviting lure into the band and indeed their new album, a temptation ultimately hard to ignore.

A while ago I reviewed the e.p. ‘Slices from…’ by French rockers Yeallow. I remember ending the review with the words ‘Yeallow smells like summer’. I liked the no-nonsense approach and the lightheartedness of their music and I still do. So when the album arrived, I was pretty curious about the other songs. It seems that Yeallow still smells like summer but now they also smell like little romantic encounters on a warm summer night.
The album opens with ‘Be Sure’ that was also featured on our podcast and still is a brilliant rock song. ‘Somewhere Else’ is a bit slower but shows a nice sing-along capacity which is always an interesting aspect for a live band. On the other hand, when your audience sings ‘It’s time to go somewhere else’, you might ask yourself some questions about the quality of your band. But don’t worry, Yeallow rocks and in ‘Clocks’ they rock pretty damn good.
Most songs on Homebred are warm, almost goody-goody, rock songs where Yeallow shows a great deal of variation and musical ability. I’m quite sure songs like ‘Whatever’ or ‘Stuck In The Ground’ will get some hips shaking and some heads nodding in approval. Besides writing solid rock songs that often hint towards Blur or Weezer (and Nemo), Yeallow knows a thing or two about creating a fun, blissful atmosphere. ‘The Trick’ is another joyous sing-along song and probably my favourite track on this album.
So my advice is similar to the one in the previous review I wrote for this band. Check it out, they have this special quality to bring a smile on your face and an extra beat in your heart. I don’t know if the latter is very healthy but who cares, let’s rock…

Originating in Strasbourg, France, Yeallow’s adventure began in 2010, when four friends were united in their common but vital need to make music. Those four friends are Fred aka PMGM (Vocals, Guitar & Keyboards), Ted (Guitar & Backing Vocals), Bill (Bass) & Ced (Drums). Yeallow’s musical identity stems from an eclectic mix of music influences from jazz and blues to alternative rock and thrash metal.
The band wasted no time in crafting their modern rock sound with catchy riffs, a distinct tone of voice, uncompromising drums and bass and what they term ‘a guitar drenched in testosterone’. It is this sound that has earned Yeallow their dedicated fan base. This is no doubt thanks to their relentless touring on an international scale with shows that have been described as a mix of ‘rare energy and explosive cocktail’.
Upon forming in 2010, Yeallow soon found themselves on a U.S. tour following the release of debut album, 2891 Seconds. It was on this tour they took in legendary clubs including Los Angeles’ Whiskey-A-Go-Go and San Francisco’s Cat Club. On their home turf in France they played the countries major regional theaters including La Laiterie, Noumatrouff and the Bus Palladium Paris.
2012 saw Yeallow reach UK shores and play some of our most prestigious rock venues including 02 Academy Tower, Camden Rocks and Liverpool’s own favourite The Cavern Club. In 2013 the band began working on new material and their single ‘Clocks’ was released in 2014 via iTunes with an accompanying video on YouTube:

In 2010 in Strasbourg, France, Brit rockers Yeallow were formed. In the same year, they released their debut album 2891 Seconds, which got the band spotted by a US promoter, leading them into a tour of the legendary clubs of the country. After more success in both France and the UK, the quartet set themselves about composing again at the end of 2013, and last year released Clocks; earlier this month the band released their new album, Homebred.
The forthcoming single from the band, The Trick, is released on May 1st, and comes thick with force and fiery riffs. Fred’s (aka PMGM) vocals trace along the track and combine with the instrumental for a polished, old school Brit rock sound, that though sounds a little out of place among modern rock bands, has a Foo Fighters-esque edge that makes it catchy as hell.

Forming in Strasbourg, France; Brit-rock mob Yeallow were quickly spotted after the release of their album 2891 seconds back in 2010 and embarked on an array of shows across the US and yonder. The band are now back with more catchy riffs, more attitude and more passion on their latest offering, Homebred E.P.
“Be Sure” introduces the E.P with gritty vocals, sunny hooks and chords, a funk-infused bass line and an all over summery feel that immediately makes the hips quiver and shake. It boasts a thoroughly Indie-rock vibe in its tone through this and as it rolls smoothly into “Everyday Radio Edit” with its prominent and sultry slap-bass interludes. The driving force of the guitars and smooth, echoing vocals though both songs contrast greatly in the spectrum of Indie-rock that they demonstrate and show versatility, and welcome experimentation from the band as they pull both diverse sounds off expertly.
“The Trick” and its doom-mongering introduction with off-key chords and a grunge-infused clatter of guitars, bass and drum sections, takes the release in a more sombre and dark direction, complete with moaning vocals and a haunting chorus with multiple vocalists. How does this work? No one knows, but it is a fantastic listen.
“Somewhere Else” marks the end of this release, with a brooding, blues-esque introduction that begins this aural journey through the various styles Yeallow have mastered the craft of. As they reach a tempestuous, raging climax of pure passion, pure instrumental genius and pure rock credentials that make this short release a gem amongst their collection.

Yeallow, a four-piece from Strasbourg, France, label their sound as Brit rock. The band draw from a diverse palette dominated by 90s influences, fortified with heavy rock and with snatches of ska, psychedelia and more thrown into the mix. Back in 2010 they quickly gained attention with their debut album 2891 Seconds, and the resulting touring schedule in Europe and the US meant it was a few years before they made it back into the studio.
Yeallow don’t seem to be having any difficulty following up on the success of their debut, though. Last year’s single “Clocks” is a visceral raw rock track built around a blazing riff. Other tracks from their forthcoming album; “Homebred” shows a band effortlessly expanding their boundaries, “Be Sure” is laid-back indie-pop and perfect for long summer days; “The Trick” is a rousing piece of rock cabaret. Ballistic guitars clash with clean jaunty riffs in a tight pop song that allows room for a good dose of guitar-based tomfoolery.
The group have grown in strength and versatility, but most importantly they’re having fun and gaining attention without trying too hard. If that comes across on their recordings, they are sure to be a hit on stage. Fans new and old will have plenty of opportunities to catch their energetic performances as they continue a busy touring schedule including UK dates in April and May.

When I got this little e.p. in my mailbox, I didn’t really know what to think about it. The cover shows a lovely muffin with way too much sugar for a healthy lifestyle, and the title ‘slices of the forthcoming album HOMEBRED’. So I decided to play the CD and quickly catched my feet tapping along with the music. After playing all the tracks for the first time, I realised why. Yeallow reminds me of a band I loved years ago, Nemo. Not many people might remember (or know) Nemo but I loved (and still do) their straightforward indie rock.
And yes, I also love the straightforward indie rock of Yeallow. This French rockband exists since 2010 and has been playing live a lot. The four songs on this album can probably be compared to bands like Pixies or Lemonheads. Pure, (mostly) uptempo pop rock songs that sound clean at first but come with a rough edge after a few listens. This is sunny afternoon music, at least on festivals it is. I can indeed imagine Yeallow playing this live on a warm day while several people (for some reason, mostly (post-) hippie chicks) dancing barefooted on the cool grass.

French brit-rock quartet Yeallow have released a new music video for their single ‘The Trick’. This is from their upcoming album ‘Homebred’, which is due for release this spring on CD and digital format through TRY & DYE Records.

To support the new album, Yeallow will tour the UK starting in April.

Formed at the start of the decade Yeallow disappeared off the scene and in 2014 reappeared with a change of percussion player and a new enthusiasm for creating, which has culminated in the forthcoming LP – Homebred.
I hope this time round they are able to retain momentum as their material adds much to the meaning of life.

YEALLOW A LA FOIRE AUX VINS DE COLMAR
Hier soir, la Scène Off de la Foire Aux Vins d’Alsace a accueilli les strasbourgeois de YEALLOW ! Une heure de show de folie et de plaisir pour les spectateurs de plus en plus nombreux depuis le début de cette 68ème édition.

YEALLOW c’est quoi ? Formé il y a près de quatre ans, c’est un groupe de quatre membres survoltés proposant un son très actuel, un timbre de voix unique, des guitares assumées, un duo basse-batterie dévastateur, un peu de french-touch électro et un show d’une rare énergie. Bill (basse), Ced (batterie), Ted (guitare lead) et Fred (chant, guitare lead) nous ont proposé un show bien maîtrisé, une heure de concert présentant principalement le contenu de leur dernier album ! Le groupe a notamment joué The Trick et Stuck In The Ground, deux morceaux avoisinant les 10 000 vues sur YouTube. Hier soir, l’impression dominante, c’est que le groupe s’est avant tout fait plaisir !

Fred, le rockeur leader qui chante en anglais, fait preuve d’une réelle présence sur (et en dehors) de la scène. Pour faire le spectacle, il y a aussi Bill : le bassiste aux inspirations de trash métal. En mélangeant tout ceci, ça donne un son « brit’rock : un rock énergique aux sonorités anglo-saxonne ».

Depuis 4 ans, le groupe a déjà produit plusieurs EP et c’est début 2015 qu’est sorti leur 2ème album : HOMEBREAD. Plusieurs tournées aux USA et en Angleterre ont eu lieu ces dernières années. Leur meilleur souvenir ? « Probablement notre tournée aux USA et notamment les quinze jours passés à Los Angeles. Ou d’autres scènes un peu plus underground où le public était au rendez-vous pour partager un moment convivial. »

S’il avait un conseil à donner aux groupes souhaitant participer au Tremplin de la Scène Off l’an prochain ? « Viser avant tout le plaisir dans la musique ! ».

Après ce concert explosif, le quatuor s’en est allé découvrir David Guetta dans la coquille du théâtre plein air pour se détendre. Nous leur souhaitons une bonne continuation, et peut-être que nous pourrons les retrouver sur scène dans cette même coquille dans les prochaines éditions de la Foire Aux Vins d’Alsace !

Yeallow, vif et tranchant !

Yeallow revient avec Homebred , album toujours ancré dans l’urgence et le frisson de cet esprit britrock caractéristique du quatuor strasbourgeois. Présentation mardi au Mudd Club.

Voilà une soirée rock à mille lieues des conventions. L’affiche hybride verra se succéder deux formations à l’identité multiple : Parlor Snakes, combo franco-américain explosif oscillant entre garage crasseux, blues punk abrasif et sensualité de façade, et Yeallow, vieille connaissance strasbourgeoise dont le nouvel album s’avère clairement addictif. Publié fin avril sur le petit label Try & Dye Records, Homebred propose un cocktail musical détonant en dix recettes rock aux influences aussi variées que le blues, le rock à gros riffs saturés, le jazz ou encore un son heavy teinté çà et là de thrash bien puissant.

Quelques titres efficaces et bien troussés symbolisent à merveille cet esprit, tels le pressé et tranché Clocks , l’indispensable Rosebud , le progressif et métissé Everyday ou le tubesque et enivrant The Trick à l’ADN indéniablement britrock. Après le remarqué 2 891 Seconds paru en 2010, Yeallow signe aujourd’hui un second album extrêmement réussi qui parvient à la fois à ancrer une identité sonore tout en proposant de nouvelles compositions marquant une maturité en phase avec l’époque via, notamment, quelques discrètes touches électro. Voilà qui résulte peut-être aussi d’une évolution du line-up du groupe depuis le premier opus puisque le Yeallow millésimé 2015 réunit Fred (alias Peter Maubeuge) au chant, Ted à la guitare, Bill Ottomo à la basse et, depuis 2013, Ced Machi à la batterie. Quant à l’aisance de ce jeu magnétique qui augure de performances live accrocheuses, sans doute vient-elle de la solide expérience scénique du groupe qui a déjà promené amplis et instruments outre-Atlantique (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Monica), outre-Rhin et outre-Manche, notamment au printemps dernier à l’occasion d’une mini-tournée à Londres, Manchester, Leicester, Birmingham et Newcastle. Le 9 août prochain, Yeallow sera à l’affiche de la scène Off du festival de la Foire aux vins de Colmar.

Les 12, 13 et 14 juin, l’association PÔle Art 19 fera raisonner le parc du château Einhartshausen au son de la troisième édition de son festival Phals’Art. Une douzaine de groupes sont invités.

On commence à accorder les guitares en coulisses du 3e festival Phals’Art. Ce rendez-vous organisé par l’association PÔle Art.19 met en avant les musiques amplifiées et particulièrement le rock. Pendant trois jours, les 12, 13 et 14 juin, au château Einhartshausen les concerts vont se succéder. La programmation fait la part belle aux talents du pays de Phalsbourg et de la Vallée de la Sarre et d’Alsace.

… Avec Yeallow, il sera question d’une histoire d’amitié forte où le besoin vital de faire de la musique est le dénominateur commun. Riche d’influences et de parcours très différents alliant le jazz, le blues, le rock alternatif ou le thrash metal, le quatuor a su extraire et définir sa propre identité. Rapidement repéré par un promoteur aux USA après la sortie de leur premier album en 2010, Yeallow s’est envolé pour une tournée des clubs mythiques de Los Angeles et San Fransisco. Formé en 2010 à Strasbourg, Yeallow a immédiatement su tirer profit des parcours divers de ses quatre membres puisque du jazz au trash en passant par le rock alternatif et le blues, chacun avait eu le loisir de se faire la main avec différents styles musicaux avant d’intégrer un combo dont le dénominateur commun serait le rock, ni plus, ni moins. Remarqués dès la sortie de leur premier effort, Fred C au chant, guitares et claviers, Fred T aux guitares, Bill à la basse et Ced à la batterie s’envoleront pour les USA où un promoteur leur ouvrira les portes des clubs les plus mythiques de Californie et après quelques dates dans les salles françaises de premier ordre comme la Laiterie, le Noumatrouff ou le Bus Palladium, c’est vers l’Angleterre que le groupe se dirigera pour plusieurs tournées. Conscient qu’un nouvel album devenait nécessaire, Yeallow a finalement mis en boite « Homebred » en prenant un soin tout particulier en ce qui concerne le son, histoire de trouver le très juste équilibre entre les riffs puissants et accrocheurs et une légère pointe electro qui lui donne du caractère, la dizaine de morceaux réunie sur l’opus se révélant non seulement très équilibrée mais aussi et surtout pleine de bonnes choses qui ne manqueront pas de trouver leur véritable dimension en live. Simple mais imparable, l’association entre les guitares tirées à quatre épingles, la rythmique soignée et la voix toujours très bien placée fait mouche à chaque fois et c’est à force de ses « Somewhere Else », « Stuck In The Ground », « Whatever » ou « The Trick » que Yeallow en arrive à imposer sa griffe personnelle sur une scène rock qui n’en demandait pas tant pour leur réserver un accueil digne de ce nom. L’Allemagne et l’Angleterre ont déjà ouvert en grand leurs salles pour saluer l’arrivée de « Homebred » et si comme souvent la France se fait tirer un peu l’oreille pour en faire de même, il est certain qu’elle finira très vite par reconnaitre à son tour la qualité de ses compatriotes !

Yeallow est un groupe de Rock originaire d’Alsace, de Strasbourg pour être précis. Mais peut on encore dire Alsace ? Ou faut il dire Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine ? et dans quel ordre ? Trop compliqué ! Alors revenons plutôt au Rock de Yeallow. Car il n’y a pas plus simple que le Rock de Yeallow, des compositions carrées, comme il faut, sans rien qui dépasse, avec des refrains évidents, des petits ponts, des grands ponts, des textes en anglais, pas plus complexes qu’un tube d’Oasis ou d’Artic Monkeys. Juste un peu moins de volume dans le son, la production étant elle-aussi réduite à sa plus simple expression.
Leur premier album en 2010 prônait déjà la facilité avec ce titre d’album, 2891 seconds, soit, sans doute, ni plus ni moins la durée totale de la douzaine de titres qui le composait. Cette fois, avec Homebred (domestique en anglais), le groupe provoque, l’espace d’un instant, l’interrogation… Et puis c’est oublié, on retrouve les refrains enivrants, comme sur (it’s time to go) Somewhere else ou The Trick, un titre sur fond de tour de magie : « everybody wants to know how… the magic trick ». Ce titre fait d’ailleurs l’objet d’un clip.
Avec leur format basique, guitare / basse / batterie, le quatuor Fred C, Fred T, Bill et Ced ne réinvente pas la machine à faire du Rock, mais lui donne un coup de jeune, et c’est déjà pas si mal ! Homebred est un bon prétexte pour sortir et aller les voir en concert lors de leur prochain passage par chez vous. Pour l’instant, plutôt du côté du grand Est…

Le rock, c’est parfois simple comme un titre de Yeallow. Attention, simple ne veut pas dire simpliste et il est justement souvent difficile de faire un titre qui coule de source. Ces Strasbourgeois n’appartiennent à aucune chapelle : ni post, ni punk, ni trop indé dans le son, si ce n’est que le groupe est signé sur une petite structure (Try and Dy). Un son à l’ancienne, efficace et direct, avec un chanteur qui ne manque pas de charisme, des claviers minimaux et des guitares qui peuvent être saignantes. Eux-mêmes se réclament d’un Brit rock – et on peut voir une filiation de The Fall à Franz Ferdinand – ce qui leur a d’ailleurs valu de faire la tournée des clubs en Angleterre et même à Los Angeles et San Francisco. Et cela donne de bons morceaux et même deux excellents (Rosebud et Everywhere). L’essentiel est là. (3.5) Denis Zorgniotti

Du rock alsacien, vous êtes sûr ?
Oui, mais à la cool, alors. Tranquillou bilou. Et tant pis pour l’anglais parfois écorné (on attendait mieux de part la proximité avec la Belgique, dont l’énergie et l’authenticité ont souvent de quoi faire pâlir quelques Britons).
D’autant que l’histoire ressemble à une joyeuse farandole : quatre potes, un premier album en 2010, « 2891 seconds », leur offrant des dates californiennes (les mythiques Whisky a Go-Go, Cat club…) et un passage par l’Angleterre en 2012 (Camden Rock, The Cavern club…). Il y a pire !
Après un avant-goût en 2014, le single « Clocks », c’est donc le difficile passage du second album qu’il a fallu enjamber cette année. Un résultat honnête, qui pourrait gagner en profondeur par moins d’uniformité dans la guitare. Vrais coups de cœur pour un « Whatever » vintage, ballade idéale pour les sorties en décapotable, ou un « Everyday » qui sait prendre ses aises (7’10) en donnant aux percussions de quoi jouer les ping-pongs.

Le nouvel album de Yeallow est attendu le 20 avril prochain. Il s’intitule « HomeBred ».
Le projet Yeallow voit le jour du côté de Strasbourg en 2006. Un premier EP (« One ») est publié en 2008 sur les plateformes de téléchargement légal. En 2009, SFR utilise le titre « Temptation » comme support d’un film viral. En 2009 sort « 2891 seconds », premier véritable album du groupe, d’une durée exacte de… 2891 secondes, évidemment !
C’est l’année suivante que le projet Yeallow prend véritablement de l’ampleur : un partenariat avec la Fnac, une distribution nationale et internationale. Le groupe commence alors à tourner par mal. On a pu notamment les écouter au Bus Palladium et aux Artefacts. 2011 marque une nouvelle étape dans l’ascension du groupe sur la scène internationale : un tourneur américain leur propose d’aller se produire en Californie. Pas mal pour un groupe qui affiche à peine cinq ans d’existence. La suite n’est pas pire : une tournée en Allemagne, une autre au Royaume-Uni, et des dates à tire-larigot en France… Autant dire que les strasbourgeois ont le vent en poupe !
Après quelques changements de line up, Yeallow, c’est aujourd’hui de Fred C (au chant, à la guitare et aux claviers), Fred T (à la guitare lead et aux chœurs), Bill (à la basse et aux chœurs) et Ced (aux percussions). Le groupe revient en pleine forme avec « Homebred », un album à la fois brut et léché. Dans une veine indie rock, avec une touche d’électro et des influences qu’on devine furieusement éclectiques (jazz, blues,…), Yeallow nous livre un opus résolument rock aux riffs acérés et aux mélodies accrocheuses. Dix titres efficaces en diable et furieusement réjouissants.
Actuellement en tournée en Angleterre, Yeallow se produira notamment sur le sol français et luxembourgeois le 22 mai à Volmerange-les-Mines (57), le 13 juin à Phalsbourg (57), le 16 à Strasbourg (67) avec Parlor Snakes, le 20 à Pagney (39) et le 4 juillet à Dudelange (LU).

Vous n’aurez pas l’Alsace et ses Yeallow ! C’est ce que semble dire le reste du monde qui s’accapare depuis un moment le quatuor strasbourgeois. Allo Paris ?
C’est le paradoxe Yeallow : ils tournent dans les clubs américains entre Los Angeles et San Francisco, file le parfait amour avec l’Angleterre et l’Allemagne… Et ne dépasse pas le Bus Palladium à Paris. Certes, chez eux à Strasbourg, la Laiterie fait le plein. A leur décharge, il est vrai qu’en France, la popularité du rock s’arrête à Téléphone et à Noir Désir. Alors quand un bon groupe taquine le brit rock sur fond de Velvet, les amateurs sont ailleurs. Dommage, car une fois de plus Yeallow livre un album bien au dessus de la moyenne hexagonale, trempant ses guitares dans le Berlin de Lou Reed ou le Los Angeles de Gun Club. On en revient toujours à ces années charnières pour le rock, 78 – 82, quand l’ensemble de la scène punk new yorkaise digérait ses prises de rix et ses soirées au CBJB. En 2015, quatre strasbourgeois peaufine l’art, la manière et l’exigence de réinventer le rock en y injectant quelques riffs anglais, accélérant le rythme et donnant à l’ensemble un frisson et une classe rarement atteintes en France. A croire que l’Alsace doive obtenir son indépendance pour donner une chance à ses groupes. Car il semble bien que Paris les ignore.

J’ai reçu au courrier un album dont je suis déjà folle. Il n’est pas encore sorti officiellement en France, ce qui m’excite encore plus. Il sort officiellement le 20 avril et le groupe le présentera à l’occasion d’une tournée en Allemagne et en Angleterre .
Il s’agit du nouvel album » Homebred » du groupe alsacien Yeallow. Ha ! Enfin, un groupe qui vient de chez moi, eh bien oui parce que j’ai des origines qui viennent d’Alsace. Mais Yeallow, qui est-ce ? Ce sont quatre copain musiciens aux parcours assez différent et rock’n’roll , où se construit une histoire d’amitié forte et le besoin vital de faire de la musique se fait ressentir, c’est ce qui les rapproche.
Pour la petite anecdote, ils ont été repérés par un promoteur aux U.S.A après la sortie de leur premier album en 2010, ce qui a donné lieu à une tournée ensuite des clubs mythique à Los Angeles, et San Fransico. En France, toutes les salles importantes les accueille.
On démarre avec la chanson “Be Sure” un titre qui me donne déjà des frissons, on monte en puissance d’un seul coup. L’originalité de la mélodie me transporte dans une histoire, une sorte de chemin où on est seuls, un chemin d’obstacles qui nous mènent à la victoire, ou au bonheur. “Somewhere Else” est un murmure avec ses influences jazz et rock, “It’s time to go Somewhere else” , la musique me transporte dans une soirée où il faut danser pour se faire remarquer. “Clocks” est un cri. d’ailleurs, musicalement, c’est très varié et diversifié; ça passe par le rock, le bous avec des influences de jazz. à propos, le rock ne puise-t-il pas son inspiration du jazz ?
Enfin moi, c’est le genre de chose que je ferais si je suis en colère contre quelqu’un : je lui ferais encore plus remarquer ce qu’il rate. “Stuck in the Ground” est un message, un message que je pourrais faire passer à quelqu’un pour lui demander de me laisser, c’est ce que la voix m’évoque. “Rosebud” et “Whatever” me donne envie d’aller encore plus loin, de marcher, toujours marcher, et puis courir jusqu’à n’avoir plus de souffle. Tout en s’amusant bien sûr. C’est un moment de plaisir que d’écouter ses morceaux (un dimanche soir, oui, oui)
On enchaîne ensuite avec “Slowly” qui a une mélodie un peu plus douce comme une chanson d’amour mais ça cri beaucoup plus sur le refrain. Un peu comme une battle de danse à deux. Et puis, ça remue un peu plus sur “Everyday” comme lorsqu’on va à une soirée d’adulte,( qui ne soit pas étudiante, je veux dire) mais j’aime le jeu de la voix, ça s’accorde parfaitement. Vous l’aurez compris, cet album m’évoque un chemin, tumultueux, pour arriver à son bonheur.
“The trick” et “Surface” sont les dernières chansons de l’album avec une mélodie plus douce, comme si l’on redescendait en douceur. En un mot, je valide et j’aime !
C’est bon, c’est frais et c’est fun alors on y va ! La France suivra-t-elle la sortie de cet album ? J’espère bien que oui ! Let’s dance.

Yeallow : jaune et joli
Le rock critic a un pu**** de sympa de boulot.
Il reçoit des albums, il écoute (ou pas), il rédige son avis et il publie. Il est invité aux concerts. On lui soumet des liens à diffusion limitée. Débourser un centime pour se voir offrir le tout meilleur et le tout nouveau sort peu à peu de son paysage mental.
Certains en profitent pour jouer les petits sergents, les dictateurs de poche, les juges d’un mètre cinquante. En cinq lignes, il est possible de saloper le travail de cinq mois ou cinq ans. En quelques traits d’esprit, on peut rendre fou ceux qui se sont échinés à produire quelque chose avec leur âme en tête de gondole.
Moi je ne ferai jamais ça. Enfin… sauf pour ceux qui ont déjà 29,525 millions de dollars sur leur compte en banque et dont le vomi musical nous est déversé en rotations lourdes et affiches 4×3, avec une boisson à bulles en logo de fond. Yeeek !
Tranquille, l’autre matin et du groupe Yeallow, je reçois l’album Homebred.
Et là, le rock critic doit avouer un autre travers subjectif de son «art », qui s’appelle « la gueule du client ». Donc, c’est net, je regarde toujours à quoi ressemblent les artistes que je vais chroniquer avant d’écrire une seule ligne.
Yeallow ont des têtes de gens sympathiques, intelligents et souriants. Je ne les connais pas, mais je m’imagine bien être ami avec eux, dans ce monde de brutes et de rapaces. Ce ne sont pas des perdreaux de l’année et moi non plus. On aurait des tas de trucs à se raconter j’en suis assuré…
Et côté musique, on peut savoir ?… opinera le lecteur de ce blog dont le tapotement de pied commence à trahir un début de lassitude envers les considérations préliminaires de l’auteur de ces lignes. Mais … c’est important les préliminaires, vous savez !
Alors bon, oui. L’album « Homebred ».
Voici de l’indie rock de belle facture.
Mid tempo, guitare ciselée et airs bien construits. Voix juste et belle.
J’’aime beaucoup le tubesque « Clocks » (Ne tapez surtout pas Clocks et/ou Yeallow sur Google sinon vous aurez du Coldplay en boucle dans les réponses !). « Rosebud » est très prenant, on a envie de chanter le refrain avec eux et il comporte un superbe solo de guitare. « Slowly » est une ballade aérienne et puissante. « The Trick » assure bien côté riff de guitare tranchant-coupant et chœurs coquins.
Bilan : de mon humble siège bancal, fait de doutes et d’amour de la musique, je donne un big hug à Yeallow parce que leur musique est fraîche comme un demi bu entre potes à une terrasse de café, où ils pourraient jouer en live, un soir de printemps et je suis sûr qu’ils feraient ça très bien.
